How to Remove Bad Smell from Sofa
There are three common approaches in removing bad smell from sofa:
- Remove the substances that cause the unpleasant smell.
- Neutralise those substances.
- Mask that smell by using fragrances.
As you notice, the most effective approach is neutralising the substances that are responsible for the nasty odour. This way, the sofa will in fact smell fresh and there will be no lingering or faint unpleasant odours.
Removing bad smell from upholstered sofas
In general, here are the steps:
- Vacuum the sofa and remove all dirt and debris. This step might be enough already to remove the odour.
- Sprinkle a bit of baking soda all over the sofa and leave it for 2 or 3 hours. Then, remove those particles by using a vacuum. Baking soda will chemically react with those odor-causing substances.
You can also try spraying a solution of baking soda on the sofa. Two or three tablespoons of baking soda with some water to fill up the spray bottle will be enough. Just make sure that there won’t be any noticeable residue when you spray. You might need to dilute the solution to get the perfect mix.
You can also try using a vinegar spray to neutralise the odor-causing substances. This can help deep clean the fabric and remove the dirt and stains. To make a vinegar spray, mix one-fourth cup of vinegar with three-fourths water. It’s recommended though that you start with smaller amounts and test it first on a hidden area of your sofa. Wait for a couple of hours and see how it reacts. That’s because vinegar is acidic and this might damage the fabric if the solution is too strong.
