How Do You Make a Velvet Couch Look New?

22/11/2022

Velvet is a reasonably durable fabric with a distinct aesthetic and texture. However, velvet can accumulate stains and watermarks which are difficult to remove. Also, consistent direct sunlight can weaken the velvet fibre. Also, through the weeks and months, the fibre can attract and retain an unreasonable amount of dust and pet hair.

Making your velvet couch look new

To get rid of the dust, pet hair, stains and watermarks from your velvet couch (and make it look new and pristine), it’s good to have it undergo a professional cleaning (and then immediate cleaning after each spill). This way, your velvet couch will always look new and maintain its distinct texture and aesthetic.

One generally effective way to clean velvet fabric is through steam cleaning. Aside from loosening up some dirt and stains, steam cleaning can also help remove the creases (which can appear as white stains because of consistent long-term pressure). This can help make the velvet fabric look totally smooth and new again. Take note though that the steamer to use should be on low setting to prevent damaging the fabric.

Cleaning heavy spills and stains

In cleaning heavy spills and stains, a gentle effective solution is a must. Some have tried the DIY approach where they mixed a small amount of dishwashing liquid with water. A bit of dishwashing liquid weakens the water’s surface tension. With a weaker surface tension, cleaning surfaces become easier and the dirt and stains can be washed away (this is also how soaps work). In using a DIY solution though, be gentle in blotting out the stain (you can also try it out first in a small hidden spot of your couch to see the effects).

When it comes to gentle, proper and safe cleaning, it’s good to hire professionals to do the job. This is to ensure total removal of the stain (plus deodorisation and disinfection) and also prevent damage to the fabric (especially if your velvet is still just months old).
